The hammam is part of daily life in Agadir. People go there to wash deeply, relax, and take care of their skin with black soap, the kessa glove, and ghassoul. Two worlds coexist: the public neighborhood hammam, simple and very inexpensive, and the spa hammam, more comfortable, where a practitioner performs the scrubbing for you. How a hammam session unfolds

  1. The heat. You settle in the hot room to let the steam open your pores, for 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. The black soap. Apply it all over your body and let it sit for a few minutes.
  3. The scrubbing with the kessa glove. An energetic scrubbing that removes dead skin. This is the heart of the hammam.
  4. The rinse with lukewarm water, using a bucket.
  5. The mask with ghassoul (clay) or plants, depending on the chosen formula.
  6. The rest, often with tea, before a possible massage with argan oil.

What to wear and bring to the hammam

  • Attire: a swimsuit or underwear (spas often provide disposable underwear). Ask at the reception if in doubt.
  • At the public hammam: sandals, towel, change of clothes, black soap, and kessa glove (sold for a few dirhams at the souk), shampoo.
  • Valuables: leave them at the hotel.
  • Tip: it is customary to leave a small tip for the person who performed your scrubbing.

Our tips before you go

  • Book, especially on weekends and in the evening.
  • Drink water before and after the session.
  • Avoid scrubbing right after a sunburn or waxing.
  • Pregnant women and people with heart conditions: consult your doctor, the heat is intense.
  • If you have children, check the minimum age (12 years at Argan Phyto House).
